I know why the Caged Lion sings!

A theatre performance at the Kenya National Theatre inspired by Maya Angelou's poem 'Caged Bird' and focused on human threats to wildlife and biodiversity. "The idea is to create the ripple that will become the wave that will change the song sung by the lions and the trees here in Kenya." - Mavin

Mavin’s show was a full house at the Kenya National Theatre. “Working on 'I Know Why the Caged Lion Sings' was simply an amazing experience. We not only got an opportunity to explore and enjoy our talents on stage doing something that we love ever so dearly, but we also got an opportunity to use it as a tool to educate on a topic that has become a malignant issue for the locals as well as the animals.” - Mavin.

During Mavin’s research trip with the actors to Rombo, near Amboseli and the Serengeti, the team witnessed firsthand the complexities of human-wildlife conflict. From experiencing the dangers of a high-speed road through the savannah to learning how local students adapt their daily schedule to avoid elephant encounters, the team developed a better understanding of conservation challenges.

“Our view of human wildlife conflict has grown deeper, and we will continue to push for change. The subject is still something that needs a lot of attention still and with the theatre industry in Kenya growing all the more, we look forward to more opportunities for expression towards such subjects.” - Mavin.
